Public safety jobs often require working at odd times of the day or night. The work may require working in isolated situations. The environment may include dramatic conditions. Often the pay is minimal. With that said, age is often considered asset in some public safety jobs.
The most common and easiest to acquire is the job of security guard. The good news is the need for security guards is expected to grow much faster in the next few years. Security guards patrol and monitor a location to prevent theft or violence. Some security guards maintain x-ray or metal detectors. Others may be involved in maintaining the security of a building and checking people for appropriate identification. Some security guards have responsibility for large sums of money. Security guards may need to carry and handle a weapon. Security guards need to be dependable, have good self-control and be willing to take the initiative if working unsupervised. Loss prevention specialists usually work in retail establishments preventing the loss of merchandise. They conduct audits, work surveillance equipment and investigate employees and public as needed.
Private Investigators gather information through surveillance or computer research concerning occurrences of unlawful acts or rule violations. While every baby boomer grew up with image of the chain smoking, hard drinking, down on your luck gumshoe, the business of private detectives has become quite sophisticated but less dramatic than the entertainment depiction.
