Retirement work
In a previous blog, I wrote how retirement work could include job sharing, telecommuting and other interesting options. Baby boomers are also looking at different work alternatives to balance against a retirement lifestyle. The idea of reinventing retirement work is limited only by your desires and creativity.

The encore career is a phrase coined by Marc Freedman at Civic Ventures to meet the growing demand for alternative work to the traditional after retirement jobs of being a greeter at you-know-where. Freedman believes that retirees have skills, knowledge and experience that are desperately needed in the community. The encore career combines purpose, passion with a paycheck.

Unlike traditional careers where the emphasis was often on earning income, the encore career is focused more on personal fulfillment and making a contribution. While encore careers can be found in a number of different arenas, most are focused in the educational and nonprofit world. If you’re interested in combining purpose and a paycheck, what would an encore career look like for you? Do you have a particular passion you’d like pursue?

Many baby boomers are hitting the road, traveling in an RV and finding work along the way. We met a couple at Mesa Verde who travel all over the United States working in National Parks. There are also state parks and national monuments that are looking for seasonal and temporary workers.

If you don’t want to travel, there are also seasonal jobs where employers are looking for temporary workers. Christmas time is the most common with jobs in retail. But, look at your community to see what special activities occur throughout the year that where you could find a part time job.

While hobbies lend themselves to entrepreneurial endeavors, paid work can be found if you have a special expertise. If you are a Knitter, for example, you could work in a yarn store instructing others. Look at your hobbies to see you could turn them into part time work.

Finally, there is the pay to play part time work. Often times, in the retail world, retirees found work that fits their schedule, allowing them to earn extra income so they can more fully enjoy their time off doing what they have a passion for. In addition to retail, look at the hospitality industries for ideas for part time work.
