If you are a retirement age baby boomer, you probably grew up listening to Bill Cosby on vinyl. We had quite a few of his albums. “Chicken Heart” was one of my favorites as parents wanting a night out leave a child alone with a radio and a vivid imagination.

I was approaching adolescence when I started listening to Bill Cosby. His first routines were about his childhood. Even though, we had completely different upbringings, I could relate to his stories.   As he entered parenthood and the Bill Cosby Show, I was raising my own children.

Bill Cosby has always been unique with his humor. He never was profane or degrading. All of his characterizations and characters were enveloped in love and warmth with a certain about of self-deprecation.

Recently in an interview on ABC News, Cosby stressed he wanted to see parents as role models with good parenting skills. He was able to bring his comedy and balance it against commonsense with real world problems. Not as severe as many parents face, his character showed that a firm hand and communication were keys to excellent parenting skills.

Of course, we know Cosby’s didn’t live a charmed life as the death of his son was broadcast around the world. With his grace and candor, he demonstrated how to endear the most difficult of life’s hardships.

In his mid seventies, Bill Cosby is still touring the country talking to audiences with humor, genuineness and grace. Children are at the core of Cosby’s work. Not afraid of controversy, he has become an activist in his later years. That’s why Bill Cosby is aging with distinction. There are many entertainers who continue working beyond traditional retirement age. In Bill’s case, not only does he share is insight, wit and knowledge from stage, but is using his pulpit to stand up for what he believes. He’s willing to suffer the slings and arrows as he champions a call for action against conventional wisdom.

Some of his most endearing and enduring quotes:

I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it.

Gray hair is God’s graffiti.
